qThis is a Ph.D. dissertation. Dementia is a major cause of disability and mortality. The most frequent type of dementia is Alzheimer's disease, accounting for about 70% of all dementia cases. Worldwide, about 20 million people suffer from Alzheimer's disease. With the increasing number of elderly in the world, Alzheimer's disease represents more and more a major health problem with an enormous impact on individuals, families, the health care system, and the society.
