Many problems in science, technology, and engineering are posed in the form of operator equations of the first kind with the operator and right part approximately known. Often such problems turn out to be ill-posed, having no solution, or a non-unique solution, and/or having an unstable solution. Usually, non-existence and non-uniqueness can be overcome by settling for 'generalised' (unstable) solutions. Thus, for solving such problems it is necessary to develop special methods, i.e., regularising algorithms. Since the days when A.N. Tikhonov laid the foundations the theory of solving ill-posed problems has advanced greatly.
